I’m sure I’m part of the 0.01% of women who go “what day is Valentine’s Day again?” It’s amazing to me how much I’ve grown to care less about this “holiday”, this one day where you and your significant other express your love so deeply… but what about all the other days? This isn’t meant to be a cynic post, because I LOVE love so much; it makes me happy when others are. I guess my relationship helped me evolve into focusing on what matters the most, all the little things.
I’ve been with my boyfriend, Jesse, for 5 years (my longest relationship). We met each other at work, so we saw each other EVERY SINGLE DAY… and STILL do! We turned our lunch breaks into mini dates, taking advantage of the time to get to each know other outside of the traditional date setting. We got to know one another pretty fast in a short amount of time for us to grow very comfortable in our relationship.
Our first Valentine’s Day rolled around in 2014 and… I’m not going to lie, I cannot remember what we did (I could also look this up, but I’m typing the truth here). I’m pretty sure dinner… but that’s the thing about this day. We’ve gone on so many dates, spent so many special moments together throughout the years, that Valentine’s Day has turned into just “another regular day” for us. I can’t remember what we did for Valentine’s Day versus other date nights where we’ve dressed up and went to nice restaurants. Valentine’s Day went from gifts and dining out, to no gifts and dining in leading to where we are today, skipping it entirely.
Making a conscious effort to skip Valentine’s Day sounds crazy, and I’m sure you’re thinking “but don’t you want flowers, candy, GIFTS!?” The answer is no. Jesse is not good at picking flowers and I can’t keep them alive, so that’s easy to not want those. We barely eat candy, so if I got candy I would eat a piece and throw it away. As for gifts, I have an extremely hard time thinking of what I want for my birthday, forget about trying to think of something as small as Valentine’s Day. Deciding to skip Valentine’s Day takes the pressure off of having to think of something else to do and spending money, especially coming off of a big holiday season (Thanksgiving, birthdays, Christmas, New Year, anniversary)!
As I said, I love love and it will definitely be in the air come Valentine’s Day, whether it’s love between friends or significant others. But, knowing that I am loved at home every single day and that we can make any day feel special makes me appreciate the time we spend together even more. As for what those little things are that I treasure the most: watching Youtube videos together, cooking dinner together, being silly to make our dog jealous and having a cup of hot chocolate (while watching those Youtube videos).
I hope your Valentine’s Day is filled with lots of love!
